What is AI search monitoring — and why does it matter in 2026?

For the last decade, SEO meant one thing: ranking on Google's blue links. If you appeared on page one for the right keywords, buyers found you. But the game has fundamentally changed. According to Gartner research, traditional search engine volume will decline by 25% by 2026 as AI chatbots absorb more queries. Buyers are getting their answers from AI — and AI doesn't show ten links. It picks one, two, maybe three brands it considers trustworthy and recommends them directly.

AI search monitoring is the practice of tracking how often your brand appears in those AI-generated answers. It tells you which prompts your business is winning, which you're being excluded from, and — crucially — which competitors are being recommended instead. It's sometimes called Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) — the AI-era equivalent of traditional SEO.

Without AI search monitoring, you're flying blind. Traditional rank trackers can't see inside ChatGPT. Google Search Console doesn't show you what AI Overviews say. This tool fills that gap — giving you the only accurate view of your brand's presence in AI-generated search results.

How AI search works — and why it's different from traditional SEO

Traditional search engines rank pages. AI search engines synthesise answers. When someone asks ChatGPT "what's the best project management tool for a remote team?" — it doesn't return ten links and let the user decide. It generates a direct recommendation, often naming specific brands with reasoning. BrightEdge's 2024 AI Search study found that AI-generated answers now influence over 58% of B2B purchase research journeys.

That recommendation is built from everything the model has learned — blog posts, review sites, news coverage, directories, documentation, social proof signals. Brands with a strong, consistent presence across authoritative sources get cited. Brands that exist only on their own website often don't. This is why AI SEO has become one of the fastest-growing disciplines in digital marketing.

The platforms vary in how they work. ChatGPT (OpenAI) uses a combination of training data and, in Browse mode, live web search via Bing. Perplexity actively crawls the web and surfaces citations from live sources, making it especially important for brands with strong third-party content. Google AI Overviews appear at the top of Google results for a growing share of queries — our own B2B SERP features research shows AI Overviews now appear in 43% of B2B commercial queries. Gemini operates as Google's conversational AI layer, drawing from similar signals.

Each platform has its own logic, preferred sources and blind spots. A brand can perform well on Perplexity while remaining invisible on Google AI Overviews — and vice versa. That's why monitoring all of them together gives you the full picture that no single-platform tool can provide. You can explore how AI Overviews behave differently across the funnel in our AI Overview by Funnel Stage research.

What your AI Visibility Score tells you

Our AI Visibility Score is a single 0–100 number reflecting how consistently your brand is mentioned across all AI platforms and prompts we monitor. Think of it like Domain Rating — but for AI search. It's calculated from citation frequency, platform coverage, and prompt diversity.

A score of 0–20 means your brand is effectively invisible to AI. You may exist in training data, but you're not being recommended. A score of 40–60 suggests partial visibility — appearing in some searches but missing from others, often losing ground to stronger competitors. A score above 70 indicates strong AI presence with consistent citation across platforms and prompt types.

The score alone isn't the full picture. What matters is your score relative to your competitors — and which specific prompts you're missing from. A brand scoring 35 overall might score 0 on "best [product] for enterprise" while scoring 65 on awareness queries. That gap tells you exactly where the revenue opportunity is hiding.

Our free report breaks this down by platform and prompt type, so you can see where to focus your AI SEO strategy. If you want expert help improving your score, talk to one of our strategists.

How to improve your AI search visibility

Improving AI visibility isn't the same as traditional SEO — though the two overlap significantly. Our AI SEO service covers all of these levers. Here are the core ones that consistently move the needle:

1

Build authoritative, cited content

AI platforms pull answers from sources they trust: industry publications, review aggregators, expert roundups, and well-structured brand content. If you're not present on Trustpilot, G2, Capterra, or relevant sector directories, you're missing citation opportunities. Our content production service specialises in creating citation-worthy assets — specific, factual, structured and designed to be referenced by AI. Every piece you publish should pass the test: "would an AI cite this?"

2

Optimise for questions, not just keywords

AI search is conversational. Users ask questions like "what's the best [product] for [use case]" or "how does [brand] compare to [competitor]". Our research into AI Overviews by funnel stage shows that question-format queries trigger AI-generated answers far more often than head-term keywords. FAQ sections, comparison pages and 'best of' roundup content all perform disproportionately well — and they're among the easiest content types to produce quickly.

3

Increase your third-party mentions

AI trusts third parties more than self-promotion. Guest posts on respected industry blogs, podcast appearances, news coverage, analyst mentions and influencer endorsements all increase citation probability. GEO research from Columbia University found that adding statistics and quotations from credible sources increased AI citation rates by up to 40%. Our link building and digital PR service targets the exact publications that AI platforms draw from.

4

Use clear, structured brand messaging

If your brand messaging is inconsistent or vague, AI doesn't know how to categorise you. Use specific, consistent language across your website, documentation and third-party profiles — what you do, who you serve, and what makes you different. Structured data markup (FAQ schema, HowTo schema, Organisation schema) also helps AI platforms understand and attribute your content correctly. This is a core pillar of our AI SEO approach.

5

Monitor, iterate, and compound your advantage

AI search results change continuously as models update, competitors publish new content, and the web evolves. A one-off audit gives you a snapshot. Ongoing monitoring gives you a trend line — so you can see what's working, catch drops before they hurt, and stay ahead of the competition. Use our free SEO tools for regular spot-checks, and speak to our team if you want a managed AI visibility strategy.

Why regular AI search monitoring beats a one-off audit

AI search is not a static channel. Models are retrained, updated and fine-tuned continuously. A competitor publishing a single well-cited piece of content can shift AI recommendations for an entire category in days. New platforms — and new query patterns — emerge regularly. ChatGPT alone processes over 100 million queries per day, with new capabilities rolling out monthly.

This makes ongoing monitoring essential, not optional. The brands winning in AI search right now aren't those who ran a single audit. They're the ones tracking their visibility weekly, spotting changes early, and publishing the right content at the right time. If you need help building that strategy, our team offers a full SEO audit and AI visibility strategy as a starting point.

Our free checker gives you today's snapshot. If you want expert help acting on it — improving your score, building citations, and getting your brand recommended by AI — talk to one of our AI SEO strategists. We'll walk through your results and show you exactly what to do next.

Frequently asked questions

Is the AI Visibility Checker really free?

Yes, completely free. No credit card, no trial period, no obligation. You enter your domain and email, we run live queries across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI, and deliver a full report including your AI Visibility Score, competitor mentions, citation analysis and a personalised action plan — all at no cost.

How many prompts do you check?

The free report runs five carefully chosen prompts tailored to your domain and industry — a mix of category searches, comparison queries and brand-specific checks. Talk to our team if you need deeper coverage or an ongoing monitoring strategy.

How is this different from a regular SEO rank tracker?

Traditional rank trackers monitor your position in Google's blue-link results. This tool monitors AI-generated answers — a completely separate system. Google Search Console doesn't show AI Overview mentions. Ahrefs and SEMrush don't track ChatGPT citations. This is the only way to see your brand's true presence across AI search.

How often do AI search results change?

More frequently than traditional search rankings. AI models are retrained and updated on a rolling basis. New web content gets indexed and factored into responses regularly. Competitor activity can shift results within days. We recommend running a fresh check at least monthly — and speaking to our team if you want a proactive strategy to stay ahead.

What AI platforms do you monitor?

The free report covers ChatGPT (OpenAI), Perplexity AI, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini — the four major AI platforms driving search traffic right now.

Can I track multiple domains?

The free checker runs one report per domain. If you're managing multiple brands or client sites, talk to our team — we can put together a custom AI visibility strategy that covers your full portfolio.
