Search Volume

The estimated number of times a keyword is searched per month in a given market.

Search volume refers to the average number of times a keyword is searched in a given period — usually measured monthly. It's one of the most commonly cited SEO metrics and is used to assess the potential traffic opportunity a keyword represents.

Search volume data comes from keyword research tools like Ahrefs, Semrush, and Google Keyword Planner. These tools sample data from various sources and produce estimates — they are directionally useful but should not be treated as precise figures.

In B2B markets, search volume is often low even for important keywords. A keyword like 'ERP software for manufacturers' may have only 200–500 monthly searches, but if those searchers are procurement teams with large budgets, the commercial value can be very high. Volume alone is a poor proxy for keyword value in B2B.

Search volume is also changing. As AI tools answer more queries directly, some informational B2B keywords have seen declining search volumes as users switch to ChatGPT or Perplexity instead of Google. Monitoring YoY volume trends is increasingly important for B2B SEO planning.
