SERP Position

The rank at which a page appears in organic search results for a given keyword.

SERP position (also called 'ranking position' or simply 'rank') refers to where a specific page appears in the organic search results for a target keyword. Position 1 is the first organic result; position 10 is typically the last result on the first page.

SERP position directly determines how much organic traffic a page receives. Historically, position 1 captured roughly 30–40% of clicks for a given keyword. Position 2 received around 15–20%, and click share dropped sharply beyond that.

However, the relationship between position and traffic has become less predictable. When an AI Overview is present, position 1 CTR can drop significantly — research suggests by 30% or more. SERP features like Featured Snippets and People Also Ask boxes can also cannibalize clicks from position 1.

In B2B, the goal is not just to rank — but to rank for queries where ranking actually drives clicks. Monitoring both position and CTR in Google Search Console gives a clearer picture of whether rankings are producing real traffic.
